Meta Acquires AI Voice Startup WaveForms to Enhance AI Audio Capabilities

Meta has made another significant move in the artificial intelligence landscape, acquiring AI voice startup WaveForms for an undisclosed sum. This acquisition further bolsters Meta's burgeoning AI unit, Superintelligence Labs, and follows closely on the heels of their purchase of PlayAI last month, signaling a clear focus on strengthening their AI audio capabilities.

Founded just eight months prior to the acquisition, WaveForms had already attracted significant attention, securing $40 million in funding from Andreessen Horowitz. This funding round valued the company at a pre-money valuation of $160 million, according to data from PitchBook.

Two of WaveForms' co-founders are confirmed to be joining Meta: Alexis Conneau, a former researcher at both Meta and OpenAI, and Coralie Lemaitre, previously a Google advertising strategist. Conneau's experience at OpenAI includes co-creating the GPT4-o Advanced Voice Mode neural networks, suggesting Meta's interest in leveraging advanced voice technology. The fate of the third co-founder, Chief Technologist Kartikay Khandelwal, and the company's other approximately 14 employees remains uncertain.

WaveForms' website has been taken down, but their LinkedIn page sheds light on their core mission: to conquer the "Speech Turing Test." This challenge involves developing AI speech so realistic that it's indistinguishable from human speech. Furthermore, the company was actively developing "Emotional General Intelligence," a field centered on AI's ability to understand and manage self-awareness and emotional nuances. This technology could potentially add a new layer of sophistication to Meta's AI offerings.
